WE HAVE A WINNER!

Coach Susan Henderson is the winner of 2 hours of 1-on-1
coaching time with me, The Unsticking Coach(TM), for her entry in the "T-word
Contest".  Susan suggested the word
TANGIBLE as a worthy replacement for Tabulate. I’ve tweaked it a bit, so now
the T-word in my C.R.E.A.T.I.V.E. Career process is TANGIBILIZE.

IMPLEMENT

Well, it’s taken 5 Action/Competencies to get to
this one: Implement.

And, this is a BIG ONE for creatives. Why?

Because we are really, really, really good at
coming up with concepts and ideas. However, when it comes to making them happen
– er well, we often fall short.

So, today let’s look at some ways to improve your
ability to turn your ideas into reality by mastering our 6th
Action/Competency: Implement . . .

IMPLEMENT

You’ve begun to master the Action/Competencies needed to
ensure you have clear Career Dreams and Plans. Now it’s time for the "the
rubber to meet the road."

The
metaphor of "the rubber meeting the road" is a fitting one. Whenever I hear
that phrase I think of my best, teenage, buddy Alex. Alex loved cars. He loved
fixing them, driving them, racing them, and especially "laying rubber!"

Alex
was (still is, for that matter) a Sensing Perceiving Type (MBTI). The Type
noted Temperament researcher and author David
Keirsey
now calls Artisans.

The
SPs, or The Actor(TM) as I call them, are the folks who love experiences. Watch
Survivor some time – almost every winner has been an SP – in it for the
Experience as much as for the million dollars. The Actor(TM) is also known as
(AKA) –  The Trouble Shooter, The
Maverick, The Lone Ranger, and The Cowboy (this season on Survivor Cook Islands
saw Cao Boi the prototypical Cowboy or Actor(TM)).

The strength of Th Actor’(TM) is their ability to ACT and
REACT to the events that they encounter. They get STUFF DONE — their motto
comes from Nike®, "Just DO It!"®.

We
Genre Busters(TM) are most often, but not always, the iNtuitive Perceiving Type of
the MBTI®. The Type I call The Artist(TM). The Artist(TM) dreams up stuff whereas The
Actor(TM) is interested in Action, Moving, Doing, and Experiencing. They don’t have
time to waste in Dreaming – or, for that matter Planning.

On
the down side, their lack of extensive dreaming and planning can lead to the
"We-can-do-it-over-again-and-again Syndrome" vs. Do-it-right-the-first-time.
However, The Artist(TM) (us) can learn from these Action-oriented folks.

Here
are some things I have learned, and for that matter am still learning, from The
Actor(TM) Types I’ve worked with, about how to better Implement:

1)  Just Do It®!

The Artist(TM) is often idealistic. What you can
conceive and imagine is so real that it seems you don’t need to make it happen.
Or, maybe you resent the fact that making it real takes hard work – the ability to Implement.

So, you hesitate. If doing it is hard you may ditch
this idea and look for a better, greener idea. Figuring somehow that if you can
just find the RIGHT idea, manifest it
enough – voila! It will happen, without you having to make ANY effort.

Ah, I wish!

The Actor(TM) has learned that there is magic in
action, in doing, it taking steps, in taking risks, in trying things out.
Masters of the art of Trial and Error, they know that "I can always try again!"

So, stop dreaming. And, get off your bum and DO something.

My favourite Power Question to ask myself when I am
stuck or stuck in Dreaming and Ideation is, "What
small step can I take today to move
me closer to my Dream?"

Whatever the answer, whatever the action or task
that pops into my consciousness, and no matter how ‘foolish’, I take it, I DO
it.

2) Be In The Now

The Actor(TM) lives in the moment. Life is about what’s
happening NOW. Sure, they dream about the future – typically future EXPERIENCES
like what they’re going to Do, eat, or climb! But, man of man, they wring every
ounce of life out of what’s going on right now!

Actors(TM) find that easy. In fact, I suspect they are
genetically wired to do so. I saw a graphic demonstration of that this summer
when hiking with my daughter and her beaux. At one point he ran down a creek
bed at full speed, for the sheer pleasure of it. He ran over a kilometre ON TOP
OF THE ROCKS in the creek bed and I couldn’t walk bloody 2 feet on those rocks.

So, what’s this mean for us: The Artist(TM)?

Get out of your head and into your body. Walk in
the woods. Meditate. Breath. Feel. Run. Swim. DO anything to teach yourself how
to better feel the sensate. FOCUS on what’s going on NOW.

As you increase your ability to sense – you will
improve your ability to act, to Implement.

3) Focus vs. Flow

I’ve talked about this last time, and it bears
repeating.

Dreaming, FLOWING usually isn’t your problem –
well, except for that Writers Block thing.

But, the Focus thing, the Doing thing can be.

Learn
from The Actor(TM). Practice Focus. Feel what’s going in your body. Pay attention
to your breath. Attend to the physical reactions: the blood tingling, your
heart racing, the warmth of your skin. As you move out of your head and into
your body you will be better able to Focus – and, to Implement.

Practice
Doing. Practice taking itty bitty steps. Practice making mistakes. Practice
taking action. Remember: Anything worth
doing is worth doing poorly – the first time!
