It’s the middle of January … and millions of resolutions have
already been broken!
Might make you wonder why you should even bother making plans.
I’m here to say TOSS THE RESOLUTIONS – but keep the intentions.
And … something else I’m going to reveal.
So, what ARE you supposed to do?
The Big Thing last year was a movie called The Secret. Maybe you
saw it. I watched the first 30 minutes of it. Couldn’t hack any
more! I agree with the reviewer who called it a Docummercial. I’m
sorry but Bob Proctor, the MC of the movie, is no more a
"Philosopher" than I am – Sales guy, yes; Philosopher No!
Anyway, that’s not the point of this missive.
Here’s what I want to talk about: How to turn INTENTIONS into
reality.
Look, it’s not that I don’t believe in Intentions. Or, in setting
Intentions. I just don’t buy the notion that all you have to do is
formulate an intention and Poof, it appears!
It’s never happened for me. Maybe I’m just a failure at
‘manifesting". But, here’s what I’ve learned about what it takes to
turn Intentions into reality.
1. Clarity Is Critical
The Secret got this bit right! Being very, very, very clear about
what you want is important.
I remember 15 years ago when I first wanted to work with
professionals who were struggling with Career Transitions. As a big
<!–
D(["mb","fan of networking I knew I needed a compelling Audio Logo. I spent
hours crafting and refining my networking intro. Then I got a
chance to attend a monthly meeting of the local OD professional
association. I gave it a spin. The 2nd person I talked to said,
"Wow. That\’s great. You need to talk to my boss. We\’re looking for
someone to help us with this contract we have working with
unemployed professionals!" Talk about immediate feedback and a
great response. But, turning that response into reality took more
than just having a zippy Audio Logo (more on this in a sec).
How do you get clear on your Intentions?
Here are 3 things you can do:
a) Visualize It!
Again The Secret got this right. The movie talked about creating a
visualisation of what you wanted. In 1986, when I was in graduate
school I crafted a vision of my future. Every year since then I\’ve
revisited that Vision and refined it. And, whenever I need to I
mentally walk through that vision.
b) Make It Real
Find ways to Tangibilize your Vision. I frequently have clients
create a collage of their vision. Then I have them post it in their
office where they can see it every day. Currently, I\’m creating a
new collage of my vision using photographs from my own collection
and from fre\’e stock photos – then I\’ll make it the wallpaper on my
PC.
c) Feel It!
I\’ve created 9 Life Action Goals to represent the essence of my
Vision. Easy to visualize. Easy to remember. Almost, every day I
revisit those Goals and focus on how they make me feel. I imagine
them all at 100% and it makes me feel so content, warm, and cosy.
2. Action Is The Key!
I\’ll quote a good friend of mine who I chatted with this morning,
"So, you\’re telling me to get off my fat a– and get into action!"

D(["mb","Yep! That\'s kind of what I said.
I\’ve noticed that many, if not all, of my clients have the Dream
phase of Creative Career Planning mastered. They got ideas! They
got tons of them! They can Vision with the best. They are Dreamers
par excellence.
But, where they fall down is in Acting.
Seems they buy the notion that Dreaming is enough.
And, that\’s where I disagree with The Secret.
Yes. You need to create an Intention.
But, then you have to DO something. You need to Act.
If I had just created a zippy Audio Logo but never took it out for
a test drive, where would I have been? Sitting home with no work
and a zippy Audio Logo.
How did I get a 9 month contract to work with professionals who
needed help with Career Transition?
One, I set the intention. Two, I Acted: I went to the professional
meeting. I tried out the Audio Logo. Then, when that lead to a
meeting with the Program Leader I SOLD my abilities. Finally,
on spec, after that first meeting I created a draft outline of
a possible program I could offer. THAT, convinced her to hire me.
The Secret? Intention followed by Action
3) Pay Attention
Yes, you need to create a clear Intention. Then you need to take
Action. And, finally you need to pay attention!
To what?
To what the Universe says back to you. Yep! What results come from
the Action you took?
Is it favourable? Or, negative?
If it\’s favourable: keep going. If not, change your action.
Not rocket science is it?
But, it works.
Let\’s sum up: 1) Set a Clear Intention, 2) Act on It, 3) Pay
attention and adjust as necessary.
