EVOKE
Welcome to the New Year! So, how many times have
you heard that so far?
We’ve reached number 8! Yep. It’s taken 9 weeks (I
got sabotaged by the Winter Solstice) to get to this, the 8th, Creative
Career Competency: Evoke.
"Wait", you say, "What happened to
Echo?" Yep, when I first conceived the 8 Critical Career Competencies I
thought of the word Echo. But, as I’ve worked through the competencies I’ve
come to realize that there’s a much better word. Better, because it describes a
key competency you need in order to surface your Dreams.

"Every\nrevolutionary idea seems to evoke three stages of reaction. They may be\nsummed up by the phrases: 1- It's completely impossible. 2- It's possible, but\nit's not worth doing. 3- I said it was a good idea all along." – Arthur\nC. Clarke, master Science Fiction writer
\n
"The\nanswer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery. If you\nseek the mystery instead of the answer, you'll always be seeking. I've never\nseen anybody really find the answer — they think they have, so they stop\nthinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden\nin which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is\ngreater than the need for an answer." – Author, "One Flew Over the\nCuckoo's Nest"

You\nwill first need to use your ability to Evoke during the DREAM phase of your\nCareer Development Process. And, that's what I'm going to focus on – how to develop\nyour ability to EVOKE your career dreams:Â \n
\n
1)Â Â Â Â Â Use Your\nBreath \n
\n
I've talked about this many, many times over the\nyears! \n
\n
Breath. How you breath and when you breath are\ncritical skills to master. \n
\n
Not only is it the breath of life. It's a key part of creativity. \n
\n
Recall, that the word inspire comes from the Latin word inspirare – Damn! I knew those 4 years of Latin would come in handy\neventually – which means breathe in!\n
\n
Breathe, breathing in, breathing slowly, and fully\nbrings us back into our bodies. \n
\n
Take a deep breath. Take another. \n

Get in touch with what's inside. \n

2)Â Â Â Â Â Rediscover\nYour Dreams \n
\n
I don't know how often this has happened in my\ncoaching sessions: Early on in our coaching work I will say something like this\nto a coaching client, "Think back to when\nyou were young. Say, 4 or 5. What did you want to be?" And, after thinking\n(and maybe taking a breath) they will come back with an answer. \n
\n
I just tried that with the young woman who works at\nthe 7-Eleven I frequent. Her response, "I\nwanted to be Barbie!" I replied, "No!\nReally. What did you want to be when you were 5?" She paused and then said,\n"I always wanted to be a Vet!"\n
\n
I am constantly astonished at how often people,\npeople just like you and me, have a career dream and then FORGET it! \n
\n
Developing your ability to EVOKE will help you\nREDISCOVER your career dreams. \n
\n
Develop your ability to Evoke by thinking like a\nchild – like the child you were. TRUST your memories. Trust that you really,\nreally did want that. You did! It just got beat out of you – by parents who\ntold you couldn't do it (for whatever reason); by teachers, who told you, you\nwere stupid; and by a society who judged you to be the wrong gender or sexual\norientation for that dream. “,1]

3)Â Â Â Â Â Nourish Your\nFeelings \n

When I bring back, evoke, memories I often feel\ntingly all over! \n
\n
That's my body telling me about my feelings, about\nwhat the memory means and how important it is to me. \n
\n
While what you think is important, just as\nimportant is what you feel. YES, what you think creates what you feel. BUT,\nwhat you feel will affect how you think! \n

The very popular movie, The Secret, which\npromotes the notion of developing the Power of Intention, makes the point that\nIntention manifests faster when there is emotion, feeling associated with your\nIntention. \n
\n
So, learn to trust your feelings. Learn to\nrecognize your feelings. Nurture your feelings. Evoke your feelings. \n
\n
When you do – your creativity will flourish and\nyour Intentions will become real. Â \n

NEXT ISSUE: I will PUT for\nyou! Yep! I'll show you how all 8 Creative Career Competencies fit into my\n4-phase Creative Career Development Model. \n
