It seems strange that so many creative people get stuck.
You’d think that there was less chance of creative, fertile minds becoming bogged down. Stuck.
Yet, I see it happening fairly often with the creative folks I coach. And, it happens to me.
Why?
Here’s 3 of the most common reasons.
1. Too many choices.
We all want choice. Don’t we. Ever since the early 50’s when fridges came in one colour, white, we’ve insisted on choice. But have you been to the grocery store lately. I was there just the other day. I wanted to pick up some juice as part of my well balanced diet. There must be 25 different kinds of juice. Why there’s 5 different kinds of apple juice alone. Aaargh! I can’t cope.
The same is true for creative career choosers. A number of creative folks I’ve coached were stuck, couldn’t figure out what to do with their talents, because they had too many choices.
What about you? Are you overwhelmed by the options facing you?
2. Too many irons in the fire
Creative types bore easily. We need lots of different things going on. Lots of stimuli and variety.
But, like anything else there is a limit to what the brain can handle — even the creative brain.
A common challenge for creative types is therefore being stuck because they’ve got too many things started and none finished. Then one day the find themselves, going slowly mad because they don’t know what to do next.
Spinny. And, stuck.
3. Too many details
It’s been said that “god is in the details.” I’ve also heard it said, “the devil is in the details.” For creative types the later is more often the case.
The strength of the creative mind is in the concept and the big picture. Not the ugly reality. So, often creative types get stuck when they get immersed in the details.
So, what about you?
