Are You an Artistic Type: How To Find A Career That Works For YOU

This post is for A.Z. who contacted me offline.

A.Z. is struggling with what is an all too common problem for creative/artisitic types.

Those who have an artistic nature but grow up in a ‘conventional’ family can have real career challenges.
Why?

Let’s take a page from my own career history book. I grew up in a blue collar family. My dad was a carpenter and my step-mom a seamstress. Dad’s work was seasonal, so step-mom had to run her own business out of our home, making clothes for more well-to-do women.

Nothing wrong with either job. It’s just that my parents didn’t know from art, artistry, or creative occupations. Real jobs involved working with your hands, not hour head.

So, the ‘encouragement’ I got was to pursue tradional careers. My step-mom in fact discouraged me from going  to University. In fact, I probably went in large measure just to piss her off — but that’s another story.

I had zero, zip, nada encouragement to pursue the arts. Yet alone knowing that there was such a thing as an "artistic" career.

In fact, it wasn’t until I was 44 that I even heard of Holland codes and learned that there were actual career paths devoted to artistic types.

Here’s the good news, A.Z. and other artistic types.

You can find OR create a career that suits you.

Just think about these famous Artistic types: Michaelangelo, Artist and Sculptor; Jane Pauley, Broadcaster; George F. Will, Syndicated Columnist. But, don’t forget the thousands of other less famous people who have pursued and created artistic careers. The artistic career path is the least conventional BUT the path with the greatest possibilities.

It covers everything from all the careers in writing to music-related careers to acting related careers to broadcast careers to any  combination of these. I know many artistic types who combine talents.

In fact, many of my artistic type clients have been multi-talented. Not just photographers but writers too. Not just writers but muscians as well.

SO, if you are an artistic type the world is your’s to create.

The challenge is you need to do it in a way that matches who you are. AND, conventional career planning just doesn’t work!!!
