Your Type of Career

I’ve been offline for awhile with a bum left leg.

I’m limping along and trying to post thoughts and ideas while sitting with a hot pack on my leg. What fun!

I’ve been wanting to get back to my series on Planning a Creative Career.

Last series of posts, I looked at what interests you.

Now, I want to look at another tool for figuring out your Creative Career: Personality Type as measured by the Myers Briggs Type Indicator or MBTI(R).

The MBTI is the most widely used psychological testing tool in the world.

The idea is that our personality shapes who we are and therefore what we will
do well and what we will enjoy doing.

Type theory, based on Jungian Psychological Types, posists that our pscyhe
consists of polar opposite preferences. That is, we are one side of the polar
continuum or the other.

Jung had 3 preferences, Isabel added a 4th

They are:

Introversion vs. Extraversion — Where we get our energy?
Simply put: E =
outside stimuli I = Internal stimuli

Sensing vs iNtuition – What we focus on when gathering information?
S = sensory
data (5 senses) N = 6th sense, big picture, trends

Thinking vs Feeling – how we decide?
T = logic, principles, rules (head)
F = PERSONAL values (heart)

Isabel added
Judging vs. Perceiving – How we like to live our lives?
J = ordered, need for
closure P= open to new information, random

Jung had 8 types, Isabel 16

With me so far?

Okay, let’s get to the core of type. the S vs N and T vs F part.. These
functions are at the ‘heart of type’ So, four STYLEs if you would

ST – The Thinkers ™ Need for logic and order,
NT – The Innovators ™ Need to understand and make sense of the world
NF – The Dreamers ™ Need to empower others, need to understand themselves
SF – The Supporters ™ Need to help others, need for harmony and beauty <!–

Each Style will be attracted to specific occupations

ST – Engineering, banking, administration — George W. Bush – The Maverick ST

NT – architecture, systems analysis, computing, leadership – Bill Gates The
Strategic NT

NF – counselling, acting, writing, the arts – Robin Williams – The Optimistic
NF

SF – nursing, fashion design, hair dressing – (my mother, but famous I draw a
blank)

Personality IS a big factor but NOT the only one. about 30% of the equation.

Interest and appitude make up about 50% more. For example, I\’ve always been
interested in mechanics and science

so I am very different from other NF\’s who don\’t have that drive.

And, if you select a job that doesn\’t suit your type: 1) you can really bring
something of value to the organization but b) it may be very stressful for you
<=== this is what happened to me an NF in an ST company with a boss totally
opposite in type who was areal bastard

<=== this is what happened to me, a Dreamer in an Thinker company with a ISTJ boss totally
opposite in type who was an anal, jerk (but I’m not bitter).
